After entering the building that housed the COGNOS division of the FBI, Diana quickly made her way through security and headed directly for the elevators. One of the doors were just sliding closed, so she called out, “Hold the elevator!” A hand came out, halting the door and she just barely managed to make it in.
She turned to thank the person who’d helped and then stopped. It was Trevor. With a forced smile, she said, “Thank you. These elevators are so slow it would have taken forever to get to Waldron’s office.”
Trevor nodded and shot her an easy smile. A smile like the ones that always seemed ready on his lips. “No problem.” After a pause, he added, “You could have taken the stairs, though, right? I’m sure that would have been faster for you.”
Instinctively, Diana stiffened. She knew they were alone in the elevator, but there was no telling what the security cameras would pick up. “Well, I need to get my prerequisite cardio in before taking that on.”
Trevor shot her a quizzical look. “What?”
Diana paused, wondering if she’d said something wrong. “I saw that in a movie last week,” she confessed, with a bit of a sheepish smile. “I’ve been wanting to use it ever since. Why, does it not make sense in this context?”
Trevor looked at her for a long moment and then threw his head back with a laugh. “No, no,” he answered, shaking his head a bit. “Actually, it makes perfect sense. It’s just… well… I was trying to imagine you doing cardio. Or something like yoga for that matter. What would that be like?”
Diana tilted her head to the side and studied him. “I imagine I’d look like any other woman who does those sorts of things.”
As the elevator came to halt, the doors began to glide open with a musical chime. Trevor walked a bit ahead of her and said over his shoulder, in an absentminded tone, “No, Angel. You never look like any other woman when you do anything.”
Diana had been following him out and she froze at his words. Angel. The nickname he’d given her the day she’d found him on the shores of Themyscira. He’d thought he was dead and that she’d been an angel to take him to heaven. Even when he’d learned he was wrong, he has still called her that. This was the first time he’d called her that since they’d decided to stop seeing each other. For a second, Diana considered asking him about it, but she saw that he was well ahead of her and already at Waldron’s office. Whatever it was that had prompted him to say that to her, the moment had clearly passed and this was not the right time to ask him about it.
Taking a deep breath, she quickly followed into their boss’s office, who was talking to someone on the phone, a very grave expression on his face as he gestured both of them to enter and close the door behind them. Diana let Trevor shut the door and she took a seat in one of the chairs facing Waldron’s desk.
“Yes, Mr. President, I understand,” Waldron said, nodding emphatically even though the person on the other end of the line couldn’t see him. “I’ve got Prince and Trevor right here. I assure you that they’ll do whatever they can.” He fell silent for a few more minutes, listening to what was being said and then said, “Of course, thank you and good-bye, sir.”
After he’d put the phone down, he turned his attention to both Diana and Trevor, who had sat down the chair next to hers. “I’m sure you’re both wondering why I asked you here. I know it’s your day off, Agent Prince; thank you for coming in. I was a bit ungracious over the phone this morning, but do know that I appreciate it.”
Diana bit back a smile and nodded. “Of course.” That was the thing with Waldron. He could be a pain in the ass but, when it came down to it, he was a fair boss who always tried to do the right thing. That was another reason Diana didn’t want to transfer to LA. She couldn’t imagine working for anyone other than Waldron.
“Agent Trevor,” Waldron said, turning his attention to Trevor. “I know that you’ve been working a case with Agent Estrada, but I want you to know that I’ve asked Agent Neeru to step in for you for the time being; you’re being temporarily re-assigned.”
If Trevor seemed to be angry or annoyed by this, he didn’t let on. Instead, he sat up a bit straighter and cocked his brow in question. “Oh? Where am I being re-assigned? And why?”
“You’re being re-assigned to a case that just came up this morning,” Waldron answered, “And the why is very easy: the President specifically requested you and Agent Prince handle this matter. While I think it’s not….” Waldron paused and then finished, “… prudent to have you two work together, I have to say that the President was rather insistent. It’s not confirmed that this will be matter of national security at this time, but he doesn’t want to take any chances.”
Diana and Trevor exchanged a glance and, this time, Diana asked the questions. “What happened and what’s needed from us?”
