GENERAL OVERVIEW AND PERSONALITY
- Lex is extremely intelligent, and his interest in power and control border on the obsessive. Over the past decade or so, he has become fairly self-obsessed and incapable of recognizing the consequences of his own mistakes, preferring to blame others for his downfall.
- He is extremely charming, particularly with women, when he chooses to be. As such, he has the ability to inspire loyalty in others, while being historically incapable of returning the same.
- As a young boy, he was quiet and even kind-hearted, but he became calloused and engaged in self-destructive behavior following his mother's death. Although he used to be interested in truth and justice, his desire for power and control have completely overwhelmed any altruistic intentions he previously may have had.
- "The arrogant, megalomaniac, selfish, ruthless, and jealous son of a $#&^!" And those are the nice things people have to say about Lex Luthor after personal experience. Self-sacrifice is an alien concept to him, and everything he does is beneficial to him, even charity (got to love those tax write-offs).
- He enjoys beautiful women, fine art, expensive cars, and can play the piano like a dream. He knows what to say and how to make people listen, and of course give in to his wishes. He is known as the Man of Tomorrow, a dreamer and a man with the foresight to succeed.
- Those that have crossed him have suffered, and many that run in the same circles as Lex know better. He has a long memory, and will destroy anyone that gets in his way, or use them till only a husk remains. Lex is easily seen as obsessed with LexCorp and keeps an excellent PR staff to be seen in a positive light by the general public. He rules his company with an iron fist, and those in the business know he has less than kind practices, to say the least.
- Lex is incredibly well-read and is a brilliant tactician.
- Part of Lex desires an heir, but to have one truly deserving would also mean he would be constantly watching his back for betrayal. Many of his top secret projects indicate the wish to leave a legacy behind.
- Failure hits Lex hard, causing anything from depression to even a violent and unusually cruel backlash. He has been known to isolate himself. He stews, waiting for the right moment to implement plans of revenge.
- Lex can be very lonely. He has been married many times, and he may marry again in the future, even if he is disillusioned. He has locked his heart away, and even with a desire to connect with others, his callousness, cruelty, manipulative actions, jealousy, and workaholic attitude quickly destroy his marriages.
HOBBIES AND INTERESTS
- Lex is an accomplished classical piano player. He enjoys fast cars, scotch, chess, pool, and fencing. He is a fairly accomplished swordsman, marksman, and an effective hand-to-hand fighter, owing his skills to years of private tuition.
- Mostly, he's interested in destroying both Superman and Clark Kent, and his main hobby is messing with people's minds.
KNOWN POWERS
- Elevated Immune System: After getting caught in the meteor shower and getting exposed to green kryptonite at age nine, Lex was given a superhuman immune system. As such, he hasn't been sick ever since that day, as the Kryptonite increased his white blood-cell count, making him immune to common colds, fevers, viruses, and other ailments. The meteor rocks are also the reason he is bald. This ability also seems to allow him to survive serious wounds (as he has been stabbed and shot on numerous occasions) and has also been knocked out dozens of times without experiencing any permanent brain damage (if one does not consider his historically bad taste in women to be due to permanent brain damage).
- Skilled Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Lex is an expert in martial arts, boxing, swordplay, and gun handling, as he was able to hold his own in hand-to-hand combat against Oliver Queen.
- Intelligence: Lex's greatest asset is his high level of intellect. He is also a skilled strategist with a keen business sense, and his access to resources, advanced technology, and manpower allow him to directly and indirectly hold his own against more powerful enemies, whether they be superhuman or not. Exposure to neuro-toxin has erased Lex's memories but not negatively impacted his intelligence. Mentally, his intellect is nearly super-human, which is one of the reasons that he poses such a threat to Superman.
WEAKNESSES
- His numerous and notorious wives, as they are the only things that have come close to killing him - and he's even been shot in the head before.
- Lex is over-confident and as a result can underestimate his enemies.
HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY
Lex grew up as the privileged but emotionally abused eldest son of Lionel and Lillian Luthor. When he was a young boy, he joined his father on a business trip to Smallville and was therefore present on the day of the first meteor shower. The meteorites cured Lex's asthma but caused him to go bald, in addition to apparently super-charging his immune system.
Though never close with his father, Lex was always very protective of his emotionally fragile mother. In 1991, Julian Luthor (Lex's brother) was born when Alexander was eleven years old. Their mother Lillian suffocated Julian in early infancy during a bout of severe post-partum depression. Alexander discovered the murder and took the blame, fearing his father would harm his mother but knowing he would not be harmed as he was Lionel's only remaining heir. He then repressed the memory and grew up believing that he really had killed his brother.
After the death of his mother in 1993, Lex was raised without real affection, parenting, or love. Instead, Lionel lavished Lex with money and gifts and sent him away to expensive, exclusive boarding schools.
Like his father, Lex graduated from Princeton with a Bachelor's degree in biochemical engineering in less than four years and was taking a break from graduate studies at Yale in 2001 when he was sent to live in Smallville to manage the LuthorCorp Fertilizer Plant Number Three.
On his first day in Smallville, Lex was driving on the Loeb Bridge when he lost control of his car and accidentally hit Clark Kent; they both fell into the river. Clark used his powers to save Lex from drowning, and so began their friendship and Lex's obsessive investigations
During his early years in Smallville, he overcame Jonathan Kent's initial distrust of him and tried hard to become a better person than he was raised to be. He also befriended Chloe Sullivan, even to the point of saving her life on at least one occasion.
Lex was always envious of the Kents' close familial relationship, not having a similar relationship with his own father. Although Lionel was harsh and emotionally abusive, Lex admitted to wanting nothing more than to gain his father's love. However, he grew closer to Lionel and his relationship with Clark deteriorated as he gradually became more consumed by his desire for power and control.
After the second meteor shower, Lex became the son that Lionel had always wanted. Lex broke all ties to his friends and began work on dangerous and unethical projects. He manipulated Lana, growing closer to her as part of his obsession to find out Clark's secrets. He eventually married her (having previously married Desiree Atkins and Helen Bryce, both of whom tried to kill him), but their marriage was not a happy one and ended shortly thereafter.
Eventually, even his father fell victim to Lex's obsessions, as Lex eventually murdered Lionel by pushing him outside his office window. In a sense, his obsessions did pay off, as he eventually learned the truth about Clark.
For the past several years, Lex has been presumed dead following an explosion. He was discovered to be alive shortly before Darkseid's attack on the planet. However, exposure to neurotoxin has caused him to lose his memories of the past several years, though he does occasionally get "impressions" - almost like deja vu - that indicate his memories may not be gone for good. With no recollection of his friendship with Clark or any of the events that occurred in Smallville previously, he sees Superman as a potential threat that should be eliminated. He is currently focused on trying to recover his memories. From press clippings and the like, he has discovered that he used to be friends with Clark, Chloe, and the others, but for the life of him, he cannot understand why.
After his return, he petitioned to have his legal declaration of death to be overturned and has been engaging in a battle to regain control of his companies.
