BRUCE'S STORY CONTINUES FROM HERE.
---
Bruce's eyes scanned the crowd while his listened to his companions' stories. It seemed to be the casual action of a man who was new to the area, a tourist taking in foreign sights. But he wasn't terribly interested in the bustle of the outdoor market, the wares being sold at stalls, or the chatter of patrons and vendors. As the man who was secretly Batman, he had trained himself to always be aware of possible exits and to take note of faces in a crowd. Since the Batman had become a fugitive in Gotham, it had only become even more imperative that he do so.
Once he'd finished his scan of the area, he adjusted the tilt of the hat he wore to help block out the sun and smiled at his companions. He had come to Egypt under the alias of "Gary Stewart" to follow up on the strange readings he'd seen on his computer. (If he had to investigate further as Batman, he didn't want to deal with the unfortunate "coincidence" of both Bruce Wayne and Batman being in Egypt at the same time.) In an attempt to pinpoint the origin of the strange readings, he'd been casually questioning locals about areas of odd activity. His companions had been telling him about areas nearby where no locals would go. There were rumors of djinn, and while it would be easy to dismiss the stories as superstitious nonsense, Bruce wondered if these areas could be the source of the strange readings.
As he scanned the area again, he caught sight of a familiar face. He had no idea who the woman was, but he had seen her before. He frowned, taking a moment to place her. He'd seen her in Libya, where his investigation had taken him before leading him to Egypt.
There could be no mistake that it was the same woman. He would have noticed her regardless, because his continued survival (not to mention freedom) so often depended upon him being aware of his surroundings and the people around him. But even if he hadn't spent years learning to be aware of his surroundings, he would have noticed her. A woman as stunning as she would be hard to forget.
Bruce frowned at the coincidence of seeing her in two different countries. He didn't believe in coincidences. So what was she doing here? Was she investigating the same strange readings as he? Was she after him?
As he seemed to have gotten as much useful information out of his companions as they had to give, he murmured his thanks to them and moved away. As he skirted the outside of the crowd, keeping his eye on her, he pulled sunglasses out of his breast pocket and slipped them on. He kept his route circuitous, to hide his purpose, as he "casually" made his way over to her.
When he was near her, he tripped over a fellow patron's foot and "accidentally" careened into her. As he stumbled into her a little harder than he intended, he reached out to help steady her and realized only belatedly that she didn't appear to need his help keeping her feet. She turned to look at the man who had barreled into her, and he threw her a sheepish smile as he lifted his hand to adjust his glasses, hitting a small button on the side as he did so. A tiny camera in the sunglasses took a picture of her face. He would send the picture to Alfred or Lucius, to see what they could find out about her. He could swear she looked familiar, like he had seen her somewhere before.
"Sorry about that," he said, injecting sheepish apology into his voice. "I'm not usually that clumsy. I guess I'm lucky there's a lovely lady around to break my fall." Seriously, she hadn't even staggered a little under the force of his weight, which was a little emasculating. He wished he had his Bat gear on him, so he could have slipped a tracer on her when he stumbled against her. "Allow me to buy you a cup of coffee to make it up to you?" He really needed to find out who this woman was and why she seemed to have been following him. He wouldn't mind finding out a little more about her...such as why she'd been completely unmoved (quite literally, in fact) by him.
