“So what are you saying?” Diana looked at Jason and then glanced over at Steve, who was looking just as surprised as she was.
“I’m saying that no one’s heard of your mystery Gary Stewart.” Jason shook his head and leaned back on the glass surface of his very large desk. “No one’s claiming him. He could have been a mercenary. Maybe one of those crazies that fancies himself an Indiana Jones type.”
“That doesn’t make sense.” Diana started pacing back and forth on the lush green carpet, the heels of her sensible black shoes digging in with every step. “He was clearly investigating. That tech that he had? The glasses? No random individual could own something like that.”
“Well, I don’t know what to tell you.” Jason ran a hand over his face, clearly agitated. “I want to find him as much as you. He might have something to do with the anomalies our team found. But what are the options?”
Steve piped up for the first time. “Facial recognition. Did you say you just upgraded our system? Have Diana make a sketch and feed it into the database. Let’s see if we get a match. Maybe the guy was deep undercover and that’s why no one is claiming him – but if he’s in the system somewhere, then we should be able to dig it out.”
“Good idea.” Jason nodded and then leaned over to press his intercom. His assistant’s voice came through the speakers. “Andrew? Can you get a sketch artist over here?”
Diana shook her head and said, “No need.” She grabbed a legal pad and pencil from Jason’s desk and quickly sketched out the man’s face. “Here you go.”
Jason stared down at the legal pad and didn’t move to take it. “You’re an artist, too?”
Diana shrugged. “Well, I’m not at the level of a true artist like the ones you revere – Aphrodite is the goddess of beauty and she didn’t gift me with a special talent in that regard. But Artemis and Athena both gifted me intelligence and superior hand-eye coordination, so I know enough to be able to put that,” she indicated towards the sketch, “together.”
“Of course you do.” Jason let out a sigh and took the sketch from her. He glanced down at it and then his eyes widened. “Are you sure he looks like this? Maybe I need to get someone gifted by Aphrodite in here.”
Diana frowned in confusion. She looked down at the sketch and critically analyzed the face she’d drawn hastily onto the pad. There he was; with the dark hair and dark, brooding eyes. Without realizing it, she sketched him with a sardonic smile on his full lips. His chiseled jaw had a hint of a stubble.
“I can, with certainty, that this is an accurate likeness.”
With an odd look, Jason silently handed the legal pad to Steven. Steven took it from him and glanced down at the sketch. Then, he let out a low whistle.
“Diana, you don’t know who this guy is? I keep telling you that you need to watch the news more.”
Diana flushed. “You know I don’t like it.”
The fact was that she hated watching and hearing about all the people who were hurting all over the world. It almost caused her physical pain and she felt powerless not to be able to be everywhere at once to help everyone. Now, whenever she was home, she always put on an old movie or TV show, choosing to curl up in comfortable clothes and relax instead of watching the non-stop horror of the world around her. Or she just read a book. That was always a great pastime, too.
Steve must have remembered, too, because he glanced away from her and cleared his throat. “Anyway, this guy is famous, Di. His name is Bruce Wayne. Head of Wayne Industries.”
