GENERAL OVERVIEW AND PERSONALITY
- Lois is stubborn, persistent, head-strong, and hot-headed.
- She is exceedingly loyal. When you've earned Lois' friendship or respect, she is loyal to the end. She stands by her friends and loved ones and defends them ferociously. Threaten someone she loves at your own peril, as it's unlikely even Superman could save you from Mad Dog Lane.
- Solid as a rock and possessing enough willpower to sink a battleship, Lois takes after her father in the strong will department. She's a tough nut to crack.
- Gets along with almost nobody immediately, as she has a tendency to rush to judgement in order to save time and finds it more expedient to retain that judgment rather than change her mind later.
- Lois is a woman you either love or love to hate; there isn't a lot of middle ground. Happily for her, she doesn't much care either way which one you choose.
- Tends to jump into the pool without checking the water level first, which often means Superman has to save her before she hits the bottom. However, she does know self-defense (learned over the course of several years, rather than just a few hours) and can take care of herself - just not always as well as she assumes she can.
- Cynical and sarcastic outwardly, but is idealistic at heart. She strongly believes that heroes exist in a world that desperately needs them.
- Lois is one classy dame. She's strong, independent, bold, and doesn't let other people define her. She refuses to adhere to an image of what she should be and instead stays true to what she is.
- Making Lois angry is a sure way to make your life miserable. She will give you a piece of her mind and is well versed in the dreaded cold-shoulder and the infamous silent treatment.
- Lois has pride. She won't stoop to the levels some reporters will to get a story. She does things the hard way, by her own skills and means. She doesn't bribe or bargain with her own self respect.
- When Lois is working on a story, she's completely obsessed with it. It's nearly impossible to deter her when she's on the trail of something interesting.
- Lois is sharp tongued and sharp witted. She likes to give people nicknames, as well. Her favorite is "Smallville" - her affectionate (and occasionally not-so-affectionate) name for Clark.
- Grew up a "military brat" - a fact that has helped mold her personality. She may forget to mention it, but her father is a General.
HOBBIES AND INTERESTS
- Lois enjoys sports and works out regularly. She also enjoys video games. She's very proud of her Rock Band high scores and insists that, if Clark ever beats her in the game, it is because he cheats.
- Enjoys monster truck rallies far more than a person should, and much more than Clark would like.
- She listens to 80s rock, particularly power ballads.
KNOWN POWERS
Lois is human and has no superpowers. She does, however, have the following:
- Firearms: Lois' father taught her and her sister how to handle firearms, including pistols, rifles, and shotguns. She's a capable shot with them and can clean and load them properly.
- Investigation: As a trained investigative reporter, Lois is very good at deduction, research, and putting together clues and bits of evidence to follow information to its source.
- Journalism: Lois has been a practicing reporter for several years. She's earned some fame for being the first exclusive interview with the hero she named "Superman".
- Martial Arts: Sam Lane taught both his daughters how to defend themselves in hand-to-hand combat. She's also kept up the training on her own in adulthood. Lois is a skilled kickboxer and knows a smattering of Tae Kwon Do and karate.
- Subterfuge: Being an investigative reporter means poking around in places you don't belong. Lois is very good at being sneaky, picking locks, bypassing some basic security measures, and lying her face off when necessary. She also has a knack for finding the perfect costume for any undercover situation.
- Bravery: It may get her in trouble more often than not, but Lois Lane is afraid of very little. She takes risks, especially when she is doing so to get a story. She also doesn't back down and is not easily cowed.
- Contacts: As a reporter and an Army brat, Lois has contacts all over the world. She has resources in the government, police department, and several industrial and crime organizations who have served as sources for her stories in the past. She maintains her good faith with her contacts by protecting their identities fiercely. There is nobody she protects as fiercely as she does Clark and other members of the Justice League.
- Fame: Lois was somewhat known for her reporting, but once she got the exclusive interview with the Blur and re-branded him as "Superman", she became famous in her own right. Her face and her works have become well known now, and she's done television and press interviews, mostly about Metropolis's new superhero.
- Intelligence: Lois is smart. Scary smart. With the exception of one massive stupid streak when it came to figuring out Clark Kent was the Blur, she is well above average human intelligence.
- Press Pass: Lois is a reporter for the Daily Planet and as such she has a press pass, which gets her access to events and places many regular citizens are not permitted.
- Superman: Lois has Superman. He's her partner, her friend, and her fiancé. He's very aware of the various dangerous situations she places herself in. Because of this, it's likely he may show up to pull her fat out of the fire when she gets in trouble. Given her tendency to jump in to dangerous situations with both feet, this is probably the only reason she's still alive.
WEAKNESSES
Lois is human and has no superpower weaknesses. She does, however, have the following:
- Enemies: Being an investigative reporter means you research things which cause trouble for people. This means outing corrupt politicians and businessmen, fingering criminals, and shining a light on scammers and liars. This is a great way to make enemies. A lot of people would like to see Lois Lane 'disappear' permanently.
- High Profile: Lois is recognizable on sight by most people who bother watching the news or reading newspapers. Her status as the reporter who named Superman (and had an exclusive interview with him) has made her a known figure in the world, and she is very well known in Metropolis. This means that privacy is a rare commodity for her. The interviewer has become hounded to be the interviewee and rumors abound about how and why she was chosen by Superman for his first interview. Gossip sucks.
- Oblivious: Despite all her deductive skills and vaunted intelligence, Lois seemed to have an absolute mental block when it came to connecting Clark Kent to the Blur. She wasn't able to figure out one is the other until a kiss revealed the truth. It is entirely possible she would be as oblivious regarding other heroes, but given that she's engaged to Superman, any revelations concerning secret identities better come about in a different fashion. You wouldn't want Superman to catch you kissing his girl, would you?
- Stubborn: Lois doesn't back down. This means she tends to mouth off and not give in even when she's in danger. Telling supervillains to shove it where the sun don't shine is not a great way to stay alive. Luckily, being engaged to Superman is.
HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY
Lois is the oldest daughter of General Sam Lane and Ella Lane. She was raised on Army bases, a self-professed "Army brat", as she followed after her career military father. With this background, she learned early on to use a tough demeanor to hide her insecurities.
Although she truly loves and even idolizes her father in some ways (referring to him as "The General"), she envies the closeness Clark shared with his father. On the one hand, she is unafraid of standing up to her father; on the other hand, she strives to gain his approval.
Her mother, Ella Lane, died when Lois was six years old. After Ella's death, Lois became a de facto mother figure to her little sister, Lucy. This has caused a good deal of tension between the siblings, as Lucy occasionally resents Lois's tendency to "mother" her. Although they do love each other, they have never quite seen eye-to-eye. Lois considers Lucy to be flighty, wasting her talent and potential. Lucy considers Lois to be a know-it-all pain in the neck.
For all intents and purposes, Lois has always felt as though she's lacked a real home and family. However, Lois has felt closest to her cousin, Chloe Sullivan. During her time in Smallville, Lois came to think of Chloe as almost a sister and the Kents as the family she never really had.
Although she did not grow up with a dream of becoming a reporter, Lois is passionate and driven in her job as a reporter for the Daily Planet. With hard work and determination, she has created a reputation as a top-notch reporter with a bright future ahead of her. It is these qualities that first gained the attention of Perry White, and he took her under his wing, becoming her mentor.
Lois has recently gained notoriety for having "discovered" Superman, being the first reporter to officially write about him and name him, following his public defeat of Darkseid. However, she actually had "discovered" him years before, having been the first to write about the "Red Blue Blur" - a moniker she also gave him. (She has grown slightly better, though not much, in her naming of superheroes over the years, having also been responsible for naming the Green Arrow.)
Unbeknownst to the world, Lois is actually engaged to Superman - or at least to his alter-ego, Clark Kent. It was in the midst of their wedding that Darkseid arrived to threaten the world. As Clark had to race off to save the planet, it was unclear whether the marriage was official or not, for a time. This is a subject of considerable debate, even between Lois and Clark, as Clark constantly tries (and fails) to remind Lois that something isn't necessarily legal just because she decrees it should be.
Now, eight months after Superman's public unveiling, Lois is trying to balance her life as a reporter for the Daily Planet with her role as Clark Kent's/Superman's fiancé. She often chase after a story, at the expense of having to cancel plans with Clark, and she worries that this will lead him to believe he isn't important to her - which is certainly not the case. She is also trying to find how she fits into his life as Superman and into the Justice League, if she does at all, outside of her role as reporter.
Within the Justice League, her role is as yet undefined, as she doesn't consider herself one of the heroes proper, but she also wants to help in any way she can. Particularly due to the fact that she is Clark's fiancé and respects his responsibilities and role as Superman, she isn't comfortable with the idea of becoming either his groupie or his sidekick, as she feels that would compromise - or at least negatively impact - their personal relationship. Though unclear about how she fits in to her fiancé's life as a superhero in many respects, if there is one thing she feels duty-bound to do, it is to remind Superman that he is also Clark Kent and help him to retain something of a "normal" life. She is more than willing to help him to do so, whether he likes it or not.
She is much more uncertain of her role with the other members of the League. However, she strongly believes that the world needs heroes and should believe in them, and so she does frequently report on the activities of the JLA members, becoming known as something of a "hero advocate" in the press.
