GENERAL OVERVIEW AND PERSONALITY
- Although he does not condone vigilantes, Gordon sees that it is necessary to operate outside of laws in the crime-filled Gotham City, especially since most members of Gotham's police department are mired in corruption. Before the emergence of Batman, he was increasingly jaded and disillusioned of the corruptions around him, disdaining his fellow officers even as he acknowledged that he could do anything about the rampant corruption.
- Following his various promotions, Gordon has worked hard to clean up the GCPD, hoping to build a better Gotham for his wife and children.
- He is still clueless of who Batman is, or that he is one of the people who inspired the Dark Knight to be what he is now. However, he is one of the few people who knows that Batman was innocent of the crimes for which he accepted the blame.
- Gordon is a good cop, a good father, a good man, and a good friend.
HOBBIES AND INTERESTS
- Gordon would have to take a break from work to actually enjoy a hobby or interest. Whenever he's not at work, he's at home with his family.
KNOWN POWERS
Jim Gordon is human and, as such, has no superpowers. However, he has the following:
- Right Hand: It's the hand he uses to turn on the Bat-Signal. When you have the Bat at your beck-and-call, do you need anything else?
- Bat-Signal: The Bat-Signal calls Batman. Batman is Gordon's ally in Gotham. Gordon is, for all intents and purposes, Batman's liaison with the GCPD. Just like Gordon tries to help Batman whenever he can, he knows that if he has a real problem he and his officers can't deal with, Batman will be there.
- Detective: Gordon has been a cop and a detective for a long time. He's now a Commissioner, but he still routinely wears a vest and goes out when his troops need him. He knows how to fire a gun very well, he knows police procedure very well, and is an exceptional detective.
- Leadership: Commissioner Gordon is the Commissioner of the GCPD. That doesn't just take balls of steel, it takes a lot of charisma and the panache to pull it off. People listen to him when he talks. He doesn't just command respect, he commands loyalty. He leads by example, and his inscrutability and unwavering will against all odds is what makes him an inspiration to all in the Force. Even crooked cops respect him for being a good man.
- Parenting: Jim is a good father. He can give good advice, and can firm or gentle in turn. He also has certain parental instincts non-parents don't have.
- Politics: You don't get to be Commissioner because you're a good cop with a good working relationship with Batman. Gordon has skills in public speaking, press releases, and spinning. He makes deals, talks to the higher-ups, and is in charge of keeping his officers free of unnecessary bureaucratic crap that'll get in the way of their actual work.
- Subterfuge: Having worked closely with Batman since the latter's appearance on the scene, and being a parent and a detective, Gordon has a superb grasp of what it means to lie, detect lies, use the truth to his own advantage, cover up things that need covering up, and otherwise be a magnificent bastard. He'd be a dangerous villain. Good thing he's a good guy.
- Loyalty: Gordon's men are loyal. He picked them all himself. Gordon is slowly but surely wittling down and then building up his police force until he has a handful of people who wouldn't just take a bullet for him, but also fire back.
- Moustache: Gordon's moustache is epic.
- Rank: He's the god damned Commish. Are *you* going to question him and get in his face? You'd better have some rank yourself to back it up. He has an entire city's worth of cops that he gives orders to, who'll jump at his say so, because they know he has their backs, and that he means business.
WEAKNESSES
Gordon is human and doesn't have an extraordinary weakness, per se. He does have the following:
- Aged: Gordon is 45 years old. He's no longer a man in his prime. Even though he does sometimes put on a vest and do the hero thing.
- Batman: As much as Batman helps, he also makes life tough for Gordon. Gordon has to constantly cover certain things up, and he's always under scrutiny due to his relationship with the Bat. It's something Gordon has decided he can live with. That he has to live with.
- Family: If anything happened to Jim's family, it would break him. He is in constant fear for their safety.
- Responsible: He's not just the Commissioner -- he's the man responsible for the well-being and safety of the officers beneath him, politically speaking. He makes calls, gives orders, and otherwise has to have their backs. And if he has to, he'll take the brunt of any heavy leaning from above. After all, he's their superior officer. It's his responsibility.
- Target: Like his family is a target to get him, he's a target to get to... just about anyone. He's in constant danger, but that's part of the job.
HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY
Jim Gordon was born in Gotham, raised in Gotham, and has only been out of Gotham to go on vacations. He went to school in Gotham. He remembers Gotham when it was vibrant and metropolitan, when its glass spire and gothic overtones were what made it beautiful, not deadly.
At the age of twenty, Jim joined the Gotham City Police Department. He watched as the city became corrupt; he watched as the murder of Gotham's most influential and wealthy couple made it so the city would fall in disarray. He watched, and he vowed to protect his family, and bring Gotham back to its beautiful glory.
Gordon has been one of the few honest police officers in an incredibly corrupt city. Bruce Wayne first met Gordon after his parents died, and he would always remember the then-Seargent's kindness, as it gave Bruce the strength he needed after his parents' death. Seventeen to eighteen years later, after being promoted as a detective-sergeant on the force, Gordon was first contacted by the man who would become Batman. And thus an alliance was born.
This alliance was kept secret from all other police officers, with Gordon proving pivotal in Batman's defeat of Ra's al Ghul. James Gordon's involvement in saving Gotham resulted in his promotion to the rank of lieutenant. He developed a Bat-Signal with the department's spare searchlight to summon Batman in times of need.
Gordon later became leader of GCPD's Major Crime Unit and worked with Batman to try to protect such figures as Commisioner Loeb, Judge Surrillo, and District Attorney Harvey Dent. Unfortunately, the three died, but Gordon's heroic efforts resulted in him being promoted to Commissioner, after assisting to apprehend the Joker.
His loyalty to Batman only strengthened after the vigilante saved Godon's son from Two-Face. Although he had to allow Batman to pretend to be a villain - taking credit for Two-Face's crimes - Gordon still maintained his respect and admiration for the vigilante. More than anyone, Gordon understood the role Batman had to play in Gotham, in being the hero or the villain the city needed.
Slowly but surely, Jim Gordon has been wittling down the corruption of the GCPD and building up a force he can trust and depend on. It hasn't been easy, it hasn't even been very effective -- but at least now, with the Batman and a GCPD that they can begin to trust, Gotham City can sleep.
It's an uneasy sleep, but it's sleep none the less.
